2001/August/14: 3-1 Loss for the Vancouver Whitecaps versus the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer (MLS)

Vancouver took on one of the hottest teams in Major League Soccer, and for the first 45 minutes were more than a match for the visitors. But in the second half, San Jose inserted 19-year-old California phenom Landon Donovan, and the rising star of US soccer took the game to a new level, leading the Earthquakes to the inaugural Vancouver Cup with two goals and an assist. Ironically, Donovan has local roots, as his father Tim is from Victoria, BC.

Most of the near sell-out crowd were there to see the return of Whitecaps legend Peter Beardsley, and the former England star barely put a boot wrong while playing the full 90 minutes. However it was Vancouver striker Jason Jordan who stole the show, terrorising the San Jose defence in the first half with a flurry of chances including one shot that glanced off the far post.

Vancouver's defence, already missing the injured Geordie Lyall, started to lose its shape when Steve McCauley limped off in the first half. All three of San Jose's goals were the result of defensive errors.

2001/August/10: 3-1 Win for the Vancouver Whitecaps versus the Portland Timbers

The second largest crowd of the season cheered the Whitecaps to their ninth win in ten games; a 3-1 Win over the Portland Timbers. The Whitecaps came through in the second half, which they dedicated to striker Domenic Mobilio, whose #10 jersey was retired in a Half-Time Ceremony. Forward Jason Jordan paced the attack with a goal and two assists, running his goal scoring streak to five games.

Dave Morris netted the game-winner in the 69th minute, while Steve Kindel's late insurance marker gave the Caps the maximum five points. Vancouver closes out their five-game home stand having earned 24 of a possible 25 points, improving to 12W-5L-1T and 55 points, to put them ten points ahead of the second place Milwaukee Rampage in the Western Conference standings. Portland drops to 9-9-2 for 42 points. The win may have come at a cost though as defender Geordie Lyall left the game in the first half with a suspected ligament injury to his knee.

2001/July/08: 1-0 Win for the Vancouver Whitecaps versus the Montreal Impact

2001/July/06: 3-1 Win for the Vancouver Whitecaps versus the Toronto Lynx

2001/July/01: 3-2 Win for the Vancouver Whitecaps versus the San Diego Flash FC

2001/June/24: 5-1 Loss for the Vancouver Whitecaps versus the Seattle Sounders

2001/June/13: 1-1 Tie between the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Portland Timbers

2001/June/08: 1-0 Win for the Vancouver Whitecaps versus the Minnesota Thunder

2001/June/03: 1-0 Loss for the Vancouver Whitecaps versus the Milwaukee Rampage

2001/June/02: 1-0 Loss for the Vancouver Whitecaps versus the Minnesota Thunder

2001/May/25: 1-0 Win for the Vancouver Whitecaps versus the El Paso Patriots

2001/May/19: 2-1 Loss for the Vancouver Whitecaps versus the Milwaukee Rampage

The Whitecaps much-anticipated home opener against the Milwaukee Rampage exceeded many expectations, attracting an over-capacity crowd of 7059, the largest ever to watch an A-League game in Vancouver (7000 is a sell-out). Unfortunately though, the re-launch of the Whitecaps saw a repeat of the scoreline from the home opener of the original NASL Whitecaps, who lost 2-1 to the San Jose Earthquakes on May 5, 1974. This is Vancouver's third straight home opener loss and fifth in six years.

The Whitecaps started well, with Steve Kindel scoring in the 7th minute. However, the Rampage, who had the second best record in the league last season, proved resilient opponents, despite the absence of several top players, including 2000 A-League MVP Digital Takawira, due to problems obtaining travel visas. With the score tied 1-1, Vancouver had several glorious chances to net the winner, including Darren Tilley hitting the post with a header and Kindel's follow-up shot coming back off the other post, as well as an 81st minute penalty kick by Kindel that was stopped by Rampage keeper Dan Popik. Milwaukee then netted the winner in the 85th minute on a nicely worked play finished off by Ollie Ellsworth to make it 2-1.

2001/May/18: The Whitecaps Fan Network has been updated. Finally, the no-where-to-be-found-on-the-internet Vancouver Whitecaps Anthem, "White is the Colour, Soccer is the Game", has been posted on the Anthems & Chants section. As Whitecaps Fans, it is something worth memorizing.

Please also note that two Chants have also been included, the "WHITE"-"CAPS" Chant and the crazy Ogie Ogie Ogie Chant.

2001/May/18: It has been 17 years since a soccer game has been broadcast on Vancouver radio. On Saturday May 19, that changes. The new all-sports radio station The TEAM 1040 will broadcast the Home Openner of the Vancouver Whitecaps versus the Milwaukee Rampage.

Time: 7.30pm

2001/May/11: The Vancouver Whitecaps and Vancouver Breakers Soccer Clubs, together with ProWave Soccer announced their partnership with Vancouver's popular beach soccer tournament, to present the Fifth Annual ProWave Beach Soccer Blast, August 10-12, 2001, at Spanish Banks in Vancouver.

2001/May/10: The San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer (MLS) will square off against the Vancouver Whitecaps of the USL A-League in a Friendly (Exhibition) Match on Tuesday, August 14, at Burnaby's Swangard Stadium.

It marks the first visit to Vancouver by an MLS Soccer Club, and provides a rematch of the 3-1 loss to San Jose in 1998, Vancouver's only previous encounter with an MLS side. That 3-1 Friendly loss on June 14, 1998 was against the San Jose Clash as they were then known. The Clash were renamed the Earthquakes for the 2000 season, reviving the name of the NASL San Jose Earthquakes.

2001/May/10: The section "Soccer in Vancouver" has been renamed "Soccer History" to clarify what this section is about. It is not yet uploaded, but the information contained within will have the History of Soccer in British Columbia, as well as Vancouver. Furthermore, it will archive information about the original Whitecaps and the 86ers.

2001/May/05: CAPS WIN !!!!!!!!!!

The Vancouver Whitecaps opened their 2001 A-League season with a gutsy 1-0 Win over the Seattle Sounders at Seattle's Memorial Stadium thanks to a 17th minute goal from striker Darren Tilley.

The Whitecaps played the game's final 35 minutes a man down, after defender Steve McCauley was red carded in the 55th minute and a Seattle penalty kick awarded. McCauley was judged to have blocked a shot from Seattle's Rees Bettinger on the goal line with his arm, preventing a certain goal. Leighton O'Brien took the penalty kick for Seattle, but hit the goal post, with Chris Forsberg then firing the rebound wide of the empty net. Whitecaps goalkeeper Didar Sandhu made seven saves to earn the shutout, as Seattle out-shot Vancouver 18-5 in the second half, and 26-10 overall.

2001/May/05: Whitecaps Fan Network is nearing completion. The Caps' Schedule (with Results) has been uploaded and available for viewing.

2001/May/03: Kingston, Jamaica-born, and Regina-raised Kevin Holness has been named the Captain of the Vancouver Whitecaps by Coach Dale Mitchell. Also announced by the Caps were the contract signings of Midfielder Steve Kindel, Defender Steve McCauley, and Goalkeeper Didar Sandhu.

2001/May/01: MOBIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILIO!!!! Vancouver Native Dominic Mobilio has announced his retirement from the Soccer Field at the age of 32. Mobilio is familiar to the Vancouver soccer scene. He played 14 Seasons as Striker for the 86ers (as the Caps were known prior to the 2001 Season). He has indicated that he will continue to play Indoor Soccer, but Vancouver fans will miss his awesome playing skills. The Whitecaps Fan Network will forever honour him and thank him for the excitement he brought to the Fans.

2001/April/30: The Vancouver Whitecaps ended their Preseason with a winning record of 6-1. Their last three Preseason games were known as the Canterbury Classic Preseason Tournament where the Caps wound up with a 1-1 record. Their only loss came opposite the MLS Project-40. Though they closed off the Preseason by beating the rivals from Seattle, the Sounders on Sunday April 29, 2001 with a come-from-behind 2-1 win.
